By By Emma JardinePublished June 23, 2018 07:15:58US Senator Bob Menendez said on Thursday that he would introduce legislation to grant Canadian students permanent residency status in the US, after Canada’s government said that it would not allow them to enter.
The US has temporarily barred Canadian students and permanent residents from entering the country due to threats from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants.US President Donald Trump has said the move is necessary to prevent the flow of refugees to the US and that it is “cruel” to send Canadians to fight for IS in Iraq and Syria.US Senator Menendez, who has called for a permanent ban on Canadians entering the US to prevent their entry to the Middle East, said the bill he would push to grant permanent residency to Canadians would also allow US citizens and permanent US residents to enter Canada for a limited time.
Menendez’s bill would also make it easier for Canadian citizens and US residents who already hold permanent residency in Canada to apply for permanent residency.
“This is about ensuring that the American people are safe and the Canadian people are free to live, work, study, and travel around the world,” Menendez told reporters.
“We should not send Canadian citizens back to dangerous countries where they will face persecution and discrimination.”US Senator Elizabeth Warren called on Trump to cancel the ban, saying the move was not only cruel but also ineffective.
“It’s really important that we understand the consequences of this decision,” Warren told reporters on Thursday.
“The only way to do that is to send a message to all of the countries around the globe that are hosting Canadian citizens who want to come here and stay and work, and who have been victims of violence, that the United States is serious about keeping them safe.”
Senator Warren said the US has already sent several hundred Canadian students back to Canada, but that the Trump administration’s decision would make them all feel “very unwelcome.”
“We know that the Canadian government will not accept any of these people back, so it is going to be very difficult for them to be able to go back to their home country,” Warren said.
“But I think it’s really unfair that they are being denied their opportunity to travel and live in the United Kingdom.”
Canada is the only country in the world that allows permanent residency for Canadian nationals who have already lived in the country for a certain period of time.
The Canadian government has repeatedly said that its decision to bar Canadians from the US was necessary to ensure their safety and security.
In a statement, Menendez’s office said that the senator’s bill will allow Canadian nationals with a valid visa to apply and apply for a temporary stay in the state of Minnesota, to be approved for permanent residence.
“Senator Menendez and his colleagues are looking forward to introducing their bill to grant a permanent residence to Canadian citizens,” the statement read.
“I look forward to working with Senators Menendez & Co. on legislation to make this permanent.”
The Senate on Wednesday approved a bipartisan immigration bill that would lift the current ban on Canadian students entering the United Sates, and would allow them into the country if they meet certain conditions.
The bill passed the Senate easily, with all Democrats in support and all Republicans in opposition.
Senator Meneses bill would allow Canadians who already have a valid US visa to enter to Minnesota.
